From homeless to homeowner…

…this is the story of James and Nanea Mawae…

“With the help of local charities, one Green Bay family is beating homelessness to become homeowners.

“It’s a blessing just to even have the opportunity to own a house,” James Mawae said.

James is working with volunteers from Habitat for Humanity to build a home on Green Bay’s west side.

James came to Wisconsin to escape a life based on drugs in Hawaii. He secured a job here, but he wasn’t making enough money to pay all of his rent in one installment. James, his wife, Nanea, and their five children were evicted from their home. They were forced to live out of their car.

Freedom House Ministries is one of the organizations working with the Mawaes.

“Now, they’re going to go from homelessness – from a homeless shelter – to home owners. That’s just fantastic,” Freedom House President Robyn Davis said.

Davis says homelessness is not simply an economic issue. It’s really about the breakdown of the family.

“When the family stops working together as a unit, that’s really what leads to homelessness,” Davis said.

With the depressed economy, more families need help. Freedom House’s wait list has increased in the last year. Right now, 43 families are waiting for help.

“We need to get from here to there, and there is serving every homeless family with children in Brown County,” Davis said.” Source: From Homeless to Homeowner – WGBA -
